Warhammer 40k Space Marine

Before I begin, I'd be remiss if I didn't mention that you do not need to know anything about the Warhammer 40,000 universe before delving into Space Marine. I haven't read any of the books, played the tabletop game, or played the Dawn of War games and I still got plenty of enjoyment from Space Marine. The plot does a good job of explaining what needs to be explained as I never felt lost or confused about what was happening. It even inspired me to get more involved in the universe and check out the Dawn of War games for PC.

Space Marine is the very definition of an action game, a sharp contrast to Warhammer's real time strategy games the community has come to know and love. Many times you'll forget entirely about the plot and just bathe in the crimson glory of slaying Ork after Ork. There's no cover system in the game and I think it's better for it. There's an oversaturation of chest-high walls in third person shooters that makes this game awfully refreshing. Combat is nothing new: you'll be shooting, throwing grenades, evading, and using your melee weapon to dispatch your enemies.

One of the biggest advantages of the PC versions is remappable keys. You can remap any action to any button, including the ability to remap movement to the mouse button. Precision aiming will be required and "target assist" is only available if you use a supported gamepad. One-handed gamers may have difficulties even with the remappable keys as there are often many things to take care of at once. There are sensitivity sliders and smoothing options for mouse control. Subtitles are included for dialogue and certain noises, but it is not always made clear who is speaking. There are also no audio cues in the game that do not also have a visual cue. Colorblind gamers will have no problems playing the game as there are no color distinctions to be made throughout the game. There are the three standard difficulties and easy mode has the enemies not only shooting less, but doing less damage. Checkpoints are fairly liberal.

At a Glance
Mobility: Precision aiming is definitely required; target assist is only for gamepads. All keys are remappable to any button. One-handed gamers may have difficulties with some of the more action-packed sequences.
Score: 6/10

Hearing: Subtitles are available and include sounds, but do not identify who is speaking. No audio-only cues are present.
Score: 8/10

Vision: Colors are not integral to gameplay. Low-vision gamers won't encounter any issues. Subtitles are easy to read.
Score: 10/10

Overall: I was quite impressed for Space Marine's story to not only leave me content with the experience, but to draw me in and make me actively interested considering I've never dabbled in the Warhammer universe before. And hey, it's a pretty accessible game on PC as well!
